Choosealocal — Reviews and Content Policy
Version 3.0 · effective 13/08/2026
Last updated: 13 August 2026
This covers reviews you write about a business, replies a business
writes, and posts on the local notice board.
1. Reviews must be genuine
Only leave a review for a service you actually received. We do not
allow, and will remove:
- reviews of a business you have never used
- reviews written by the business itself, by its staff, family or
friends, or by anyone asked to do so on its behalf - reviews written in exchange for payment, a discount, a free service or
any other benefit - more than one review of the same job
Incentivised reviews. A business may ask you for a review. It must
not offer you anything in return for one, and it must never make an
offer conditional on the review being positive. If you were given
anything at all in connection with a review, say so in the review
itself.
Publishing fake or incentivised reviews without disclosure is against
the law, and we take reasonable steps to prevent it: reviews are tied to
a real booking on the platform, and we investigate reports.
2. What a review should contain
Your honest experience of the service. Keep it to what happened.
We remove content that is:
- untrue, or presented as fact when it is opinion
- abusive, threatening, or discriminatory
- someone's personal information — an address, a phone number, a
photograph of a person who has not agreed to it - about a dispute better handled directly, such as a billing
disagreement, where nothing about the service itself is described - unrelated advertising
3. The business's right of reply
A business can reply publicly to any review of it, once. Replies are
subject to the same rules: no abuse, and no revealing the customer's
personal details — including any detail of the service that would
identify them to others.
4. Reporting something
Any review, reply or board post can be reported. Tell us which and why,
at [email protected] or with the report link on the item itself.
We aim to look within five working days. If content clearly breaks this
policy we remove it. If it is a factual dispute between two people, we
will normally leave the review and the reply standing and let readers
judge — we are not able to determine who is right about what happened,
and removing a review because a business disputes it would make the
reviews worthless.
We tell the person who reported it what we decided.
5. When we remove or suspend
We may remove content, and in serious or repeated cases suspend an
account. Where we do, we say what was removed and why, and you can
challenge it by replying to us. We will not remove a genuine review
because a business asks us to.
6. Notice board posts
Posts must be about local events, offers or news, from a business
operating in the area covered. No misleading claims about price or
availability, nothing unlawful, and nothing that would need an age
restriction.
7. Your content
You keep ownership of what you write. By posting it you allow us to
display it on the platform. If you delete your account your reviews are
deleted with it.
